Sanno Faces 1st Flood In 40 Years!!

August 14th, 1998

Sanno, Kamishii-mura, Fukui experienced it's first flood in 40 years this morning. The past two days have seen heavy rain, filling the rivers and the canals around the area to the brim. This morning, not being able to transport any more water, a thick, brown, mucky sluice began pouring over the edge of the otherwise 5'deep embankment.

"Forty years ago when I was a little kid, the river was in pretty bad shape and we had a flood. Since then they fixed it all up and I have never seen water like this until this morning", commented Mrs. Hashimoto, a Sanno area resident.

"It's really raining!", said Mr. Arakawa when asked what he thought of this event.

The citizens of Sanno all banded together, clustering in small to large groups and commenting on the rising water level as it slowly worked its way into the entranceways of the neighboring houses.

Your intrepid reporters ventured out into the storm today, braving life and limb to capture this rare event in the history of Sanno.
