About the Yoshida Ranma Gallery
Located deep within the mountains on the west coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan, Yamanaka Onsen, a quiet and very quaint famous hot spring town is the home to the Yoshida Ranma Gallery. With its hot summers, cold winters and high humidity, the climate is perfectly matched for the art created by the Yoshidas.
Hand-made using a unique, patented process that employs traditional, delicate Japanese paper and special "antiquing" techniques which utilize natural tree-based stains, the Yoshida's have been carrying on a family tradition for 20 years.
Each individual work of art is meticulously handcrafted to the finest detail. No two pieces are exactly alike.
Aging beautifully with time, each piece takes on a particularly life of its own. With proper care and attention, these objects of art should last a lifetime or more.
The Yoshida's value the customer's impressions and work together to provide an individually crafted collectible that can be proudly displayed.
Before the project is begun, the artists prefer to determine what form, or shape best suits the customer's needs. Through this unprecedented artist-client communication, personalized objects can be carefully constructed.
Notes on the Chinese Calendar
The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac. Like the Western calendar, The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly one, with the start of the lunar year being based on the cycles of the moon. Therefore, because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. This year it falls on February 12th. A complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five cycles of 12 years each.
The Chinese Lunar Calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."
Here is a brief list of the animals in the calendar:
