Ranma: a wooden panel with openwork carving used as a decorative transom above paper sliding doors
During the Nara period in Japanese history (8th century) there was a great desire to create statues of Buddha using hemp, paper, sawdust and lacquer instead of the traditional wood and iron. These works of art became very popular at the time.

About 1955, the Yoshida family began studying this traditional way of art and applied it to their own use. Using mainly paper and the above technique they began to create lacquer ware for sale and as art objects. In 1964 they changed their business and began designing ranma made from paper and lacquer. In 1964 they received a special patent from the patent office for their original work. To this day they are the only family in Japan producing ranma from paper and lacquer.

If, after looking at these amazing works of art, there is something that you might like to purchase, please contact the gallery managers by writing to japanippon (at) japanippon (dot) com for details. Many other designs can me custom made if details are presented. We look forward to hearing from you.
